To all,
We had a SBF-1 Breaker Failure Relay fail on us yesterday. The time delay was not working properly. We have many of these relays on our system and wanted to see if there has been a Relay Advisory, or PAL letter on this relay. Would also like to hear if any other utility has had problems with this relay. The relay was tested in January of this year and there was not a problem discovered with the time delay at that time. If you would let me know at your earliest that would be appreciated. I will put together a summary of the response and submit them back to the group. Thanks for your time and effort.Model SBF-1

These relays are pretty tricky to test. You need to make sure you test both the Control time and the Breaker Failure time. The control time must be a longer delay then the Breaker Failure time or the relay will not trip.
Here is a short test procedure to test the control timer and the breaker failure timer.
Control Timer
Monitor [Control Timer Test Jack and Terminal 8 (Common Negative)]BFI [125 Vdc in 9 out 8]
Set test set to monitor falling edge and wet contact. Apply BFI voltage and measure time delay
Breaker Failure Timer
Monitor [Breaker Failure Timer and Terminal 8 (Common Negative)] BFI [125 Vdc in 9 out 8]
Set test set to monitor falling edge and wet contact. Apply BFI voltage and measure time delay
Maybe a dumb question, but was the testing jumper removed after the last test before the relay was reinstalled for service?
