ABB REL 512

ABB REL 512

It would appear that everyone is either having no issues with ABB relays or ignoring them in hopes that they will go away.
That said, is anyone using a Doble 6150 w/Protest and have good results?

  1. If this is the older version with the dos software, my friend replaces the firmware on these bad boys every year it seems.

  2. I have used the Doble F6150 to test the ABB REL-512. I came here looking for help in January and I also concluded that everyone was ignoring ABB relays. I had to run several tests a couple of times to get them to pass by ABB’s published standard. Elements occassionally needed to cool off for apx. 5 minutes, then would pass.

  3. It’s been a while since I tested some ABB REL-512 relays but they seemed to work fine when tested manually by applying true 3 phase, phase-phase, and phase to ground faults and ramping values simultaneously.

That’s right! Most Tech’s are being asked to run automated test programs given to them by someone from their office and it requires a lot of finesse to make them work. I have run the tests as you said manually with no problem however I was looking to see if anyone had templates that might give better results useing ProTest maros.

    ps. book is excellent

  5. I have had quite a few problems with the ABB REL 512. It seems like the i/o likes to stop working on these relays. I don’t know if its because of their plug type connectors on the back or what. I have also ran into problems with their reclose initiate inputs. The external reclose initiate 2 (TB7 3,4) will close the breaker no matter what the settings are set for. If you want to use sync check, HBDL or whatever make sure you use the external reclose initiate 1(TB7 1,2).

  6. I apologize for the delay.

ABB REL-512 relays are notoriously unreliable and are probably the most commonly replaced relay I’ve ever heard of. I just finished a training class a couple of weeks ago where we found consistent results via manual testing and the MTS-5000 auto test procedure. However, the results were consistently 3-10% different than the settings. Time delays were also slow compared to settings when compared to other relays. When we came back for the second day of testing after performing a successful meter test on relay the day before, the second relay metering failed for some unknown reason. The techs in the class treated it as a normal day testing the REL-512.

I remember reading an article from ABB regarding automated testing which can be found here.

  7. REL512 is phase out and it replaced by REL650 which ABB sold to Hitachi Now. We still can support REL512 which for the testing and software communication with REL tools
